History and Mission of Pelican Rapids Multicultural Committee:

The Pelican Rapids Multicultural Committee formed in 1993 and became a 501c3 organization in 2004. We support the full development and contribution of each person by affirming our diversity. We believe that our community can be enriched by diversity not only in age, skills, educational and religious affiliations, but also in cultural heritage. The organization promotes cultural awareness and fosters respect, appreciation and understanding that crosses cultural barriers by providing opportunities for dialogue, learning, sharing and socializing through art, music, and food.

Our projects have included Diversity Dinners, a film series on Social Justice, speakers for the schools and the community on diverse cultures, focus groups among the diverse cultures of Pelican Rapids—giving every group a voice in our planning process, volunteer projects for English Language Learners, financial support of a Refugee Resource Center in town, creation of a video kiosk for non-readers in English, Spanish, and Somali on important topics in health, community, education, and legal questions, and 17 years of International Friendship Festivals.
